Addendum: Opportunities for Additional Points

As I said in class, I am amending the list of opportunities for additional points that I offered some weeks ago. Here are some things you might find interesting:

(Remember the website for trying to obtain 1/2 priced tickets: www.lastagealliance.com.)

1. Break the Whip -- (Actor's Gang) A play written and directed by Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption, Dead Man Walking). Looks at struggles in and around the establishment of the Jamestown colony in Virginia in 1607. Students can get $5.00 off of the regular ticket price of $25.00. Running through Nov. 13th.

2. The Field -- (Theatre Banshee) An Irish play about land and its importance to survival. There was a movie made from this script -- it starred Richard Harris in a critically acclaimed performance. (Richard Harris was, among many other great roles, the original Dumbledore in the first Harry Potter movies.) Tickets range from $8.00 to $20.00. Check the Theatre Banshee website because they have offered group discounts in the past. The play runs through Dec. 12th. The theatre, being located in Burbank, is a bit closer than those in Hollywood.

3. Rock N' Roll -- (Open Fist Theatre) The West Coast premiere of a play by Tom Stoppard. This is a play about post-Communist Russia that includes a rock n' roll soundtrack. The mature language and themes are reportedly appropriate for high school students but not for younger children. Regular ticket prices range from $15.00 to $25.00 but there are half-priced tickets available. You might also check the Open Fist website because they do "pay what you will" shows sometimes. Runs from Oct. 30th through Dec. 17th. (This is one of my favorite theatre companies.)

4. Skeleton Stories -- (Theatre of NOTE) A play about a teenager, the Underworld, and El Dia de los Muertos. Full price tickets are $22.00 but there are half-priced tickets available. Runs through Nov. 6th.

5. War -- (Theatre Banshee) The West Coast premiere of a comedy that gives a little peek into Irish life. This alternates with performances of The Field (see above). Full price tickets range from $8.00 to $20.00 but there are half-priced tickets available. Runs from Oct. 21st through Dec. 11th.

Welcome!!!

So, our first project is the publication of your Oedipus The King explications. Once you've uploaded your first explication, you will be responsible for commenting on the publications of at least 5 others in the class. Please comment on the work of students with few comments -- everyone should not pick the same 5 students as recipients of comments. The goal is for everyone to have at least 5 comments upon their work and for dialogues to begin about the various elements of the play. With this goal in mind, make your comments meaningful. Your comments should be between 25 - 50 words in length and address substantive elements of your colleagues' published work. Of course, comments from those outside of the class are also welcome!
